King of Nutrients in Sri Lankan soil - Moringa

Moringa Tree (Moringa oleifera), also called as horseradish or drumstick tree (in Sinhalese “Murunga”). The leaves and the bark of Moringa are popular in Sri Lankan cuisine, especially when preparing traditional seafood dishes such as shrimps and crabs. If you ask from a Sri Lankan about Moringa they will tell you that they use moringa leaves for shrimp and crab curries. And also, Sri Lankans use moringa bark as a flavoring agent for traditional Sinhala pickles. But today we are not going to write a lengthy article about the traditional uses of Moringa in Sri Lanka. Today we are going to write about the history, the unique nutritional value, medicinal value, and how moringa powder is made out of Moringa leaves.

History

The origin of Moringa is Northern India. But it is also found in Tropical Asian countries such as Sri Lanka, south and west African countries, and also in Latin America and Pacific islands.

The first historical record about Moringa was found in 2000 B.C. in the Maurya era as the extract from Moringa leaves was given to Maurya imperial soldiers to relieve stress and to give strength.

Moringa tree is a fast-growing legume and it is a good drought-tolerant tree. As a member of the Legume family, it is fully capable of increasing the fertility of the soil by fixing nitrogen in the soil.

Nutrient Benefits

Most the parts of the Moringa tree are full of medicinal and nutritional value (leaves, flowers, seeds, bark, and roots).

Moringa leaves are a rich source of Beta carotene (this Beta carotene is a rich source of Vitamin A), and also rich in Vitamin B, Vitamin C, Folate, Calcium, Potassium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, and Zink.

Health benefits

Because of the high iron content, moringa is good for treating anemia. And it contains anti-cancer compounds such as eugenol, niazimicin, etc. And also because of the high soluble and insoluble fiber content moringa improves digestion.

United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization highly recommends Moringa for pregnant and nursing mothers and young children. Moringa products have antibiotic, hypotensive, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Moringa Powder

Moringa is now rising in popularity all over the world as a superfood and moringa powder is an easy and convenient way to add moringa to meals. Moringa powder is produced by powdering dried moringa leaves.

Moringa powder can be used like below.

  1. Adding them to curries.
  2. Add one teaspoon to warm water to drink as tea.
  3. Add one teaspoon to your smoothies.
  4. Sprinkle on top of your baked and other foods.
