Ancient History

According to history, Arab traders brought cinnamon through trade routes into Egypt, they were bought by Venetian traders from Italy who held a monopoly on the spice trade in Europe. Until the 10th-century Arab traders had a monopoly on the cinnamon trade.

In ancient Egypt, cinnamon was a highly sought-after spice used for embalming and religious practices. And also a popular ingredient in Egyptian perfumes. It was once more valuable than gold. Medieval physicians used cinnamon to help treat colds and other diseases in the respiratory system.

At the beginning of the 16th century, Portuguese traders arrived in Ceylon (Sri Lanka). They created their monopoly on spice. They established a fort on the island in 1518 and protected their control over this valuable commodity for over a century.

During the 17th century, the Dutch took control of t the monopoly of Ceylon cinnamon. And from Up country-Dutch agreement signed between the Sri Lankan king Sri Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe and the Dutch government on 14th February 1766 permitted the Dutch to cut and peel cinnamon of some certain areas within the country according to the promise made by the Dutch to protect the kingdom from the foreign invasion.
