Bee Natural Organic Nutmeg Powder

Introduction & A Brief History of Nutmeg

The nutmeg tree is a evergreen with egg like leaves which bears a large yellow plum. This plum or the nutmeg fruit is used to produce two spices which are called nutmeg and mace. Nutmeg spice is the large seed from nutmeg fruit and mace is the red membrane which covers the nutmeg seed.

The scientific name for nutmeg is Myristica fragrans and was originated in Banda islands, Indonesia. Roman author Pliny mentions this tree as a tree bearing nuts which gives two flavours. For centuries until world war 2 the Dutch controlled the monopoly for nutmeg spice trade and some articles mention that in 14th century a half pound of nutmeg in London costed 85-90 shillings because of highly controlled spice trade monopoly by Dutch.

The nutmeg spice has a pungent fragrance and slightly sweet in taste. And also it has a hallucinogenic effect. Romans used it as a fragrance and nowadays it is  used to flavour many kinds of baked goods, meat products, beverages, etc.

In Sri Lankan cuisine nutmeg is used to spice up Sri Lankan meat curries and other curries which gives a delicious taste and a great aroma.
