 Introduction

Lemongrass or cymbopogon (also known as  barbed wire grass, silky heads, cochin grass, malabar grass, citronella grass or fevergrass) is a tropical plant belongs to poaceae family. There are two commonly grown varieties of lemongrass as cymbopogon Citratus (West Indian lemongrass) and cymbopogon Flexuosus (East Indian lemongrass). The plants grow in dense clumps up to 6 feet in diameter, with leaves up to 3 feet long.  


Uses

Specially in Asian cuisines it is  used as a flavouring agent for desserts, meats, teas, other beverages etc. For the very reason that it instantly increases metabolism and boosts circulation and immunity along with accelerating digestion. As medicine it was used in medicines to cure indigestion, constipation, irregular menstrual cycles, hormonal fluctuations in women experiencing menopause. In some cultures the grass is widely used to lower fever for which it was dubbed the “fever grass”.

It grows up to altitude of 1200m MSL (Median Sea Level). And is resistant to severe droughts and severe winds. Well spread rainfall with a few inches is adequate. But high rainfall reduces the oil yield of the plant. 


 History and Popularity

The oldest known reports about lemongrass dates back to 17th century in Philippines. Lemongrass is used mostly for medicines and also as a spice in Sri Lanka and India.And the lower portion of the stalk of the lemongrass is widely used as a herb in Thai cuisine.
